When the world goes to Dog Poop

Published by mommyjane at 8:00 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Have you ever gone to play at a park, and you’re running to catch that frisbee, only to step right into a giant pile of dog crap? This irks me to no end. I am a dog owner, and as such, I know there is a responsibility to pick up after your dog. You wouldn’t let your 3 or 15 year old pull down their pants and poop in public. I realize that dogs really just can’t help themselves, but you can’t take the two minutes it will cost you to pull out a plastic bag or handy scooper and pick up the poop?

In this economy, I realize that people are trying to save money. At 7.00 for 120 bags, that turns into quite a little sum of cash. Especially if your dog poops 3 or 4 times in one outing. If that’s your debate for not picking up after your dog because you don’t have the money for the bags, I suggest you find a new way to pick up after your dog. Maybe with your hands! See, I’ve done a little research. On average it takes about a week for dog poop to decompose, depending on the area you live in and how prevelent the critters that help with that process are. I live in an apartment complex where we have landscapers come and mow the lawns for us once a week. Just think about what happens when an un-decomposed pile hits those blades. Yeah. And then you want to sit in your little yard in the sunshine drinking lemonade. It’s not going to happen. Or when the sprinklers come on and wash the poo into storm drains, which lead to oceans, rivers and sometimes even our drinking supply.

Maybe your reason for not picking up after your dog is that it is disgusting and it makes you sick. That is what the poopbutler.com and such services get paid for! There really isn’t a good reason for not picking up after your dog.

People complain when you don’t pick up after your dog. Obviously. Not just on blog pages like I am, but to local authorities. According to http://www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/news/releases/archive/june02/21d.htm “Each week local authorities receive over 5,000 calls concerning dog fouling, and Britain’s 6.2 million dogs produce 900 tons of waste every day*. Currently, Bracknell Forest Borough Council receives in excess of 100 calls a year complaining of dog fouling.” So really people, if you want the cops called on you, please. Keep leaving your dog’s poo on the ground. Oh, and if you don’t have your dog registered, and someone files a complaint, it can result in a hefty fine for that along with your doo. Doo fines can range anywhere from $100 and upwards of $750.

Not only is it gross to smell and step in, but your dog’s waste can possibly harm those around you. Your dog poops on the sidewalk. Some poor unsuspecting person steps in it, and slides, landing on his back. Possibly injuring himself more than just a few bruises and an damaged pride. It’s also been averaged that your dog’s poo has about 23,000 bacteria in it. It can cause Toxicosis for pregnant, nursing, or immunosuppressed persons. If you have a dog, you know how you have to pay a butload of money to get your dog vaccinated? Just think how much more you will have to pay if you are sued for causing someone physical injury. Good luck with that.

So I’ve come up with a few tips to help. Money wise, you can actually purchase cheaper bags. I just bought 300 plastic sandwich bags for a dollar. Sure, you see the poop in the little bag, but once you throw it away, no harm, no foul. Or you could start up a doggie poo compost. It’s just a plastic garbage can, buried in the ground with a few holes drilled in the bottom of the can. You pick up the poo with that handy little scooper and then dump it in your compost. Not only are you keeping it out of my yard and the crevices in my shoes, but you are being kind to the environment too.

So really people, pick up your poo, or I will just keep wishing you step in it, slide, and end up on your backside with it stuck in your hair and all over your expensive jacket. Or I may ring your doorbell and leave a flaming bag of Karma just for you.
